What can I say besides....WOW! What an amazing start to this school year. The amazing staff and students of Scappoose High School has shown up with an awesome energy and commitment to high performance that is absolutely inspiring. Yes, I am just a bit biased.... ; )
I would like to officially welcome our Class of 2017 ! Already you have bought into the spirit of our Tribe and I look forward to seeing you all enjoy a fantastic Freshmen year. To the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes (yes Seniors, especially you!!), I look forward to working with all of you to provide the most amazing culture possible. Scappoose High School should always be a place where EVERY student can chase their ambitions and seize every opportunity to thrive in all of their endeavors. Whether it be Academics, the Arts, Activities, or Athletics our MIGHTY TRIBE continues to perform at a level that almost any school would be envious of.
Our Tribe also is enjoying some incredible new energy in the form of new Staff: Counselor Liz Mahlum, Counselor Whitney Scott, Counselor Chad Cosner, Language Arts Teacher Scott Deckelmann, Language Arts/Credit Recovery Teacher Katy Rogers, Art Teacher Heidi Keith, and Attendance Secretary Tina Gift. Welcome all, we are a better High School with you being here!

And our momentum continues! Early indications of our new State Report Card scores has Scappoose High School performing at a level worthy of celebration. To recap; Reading 90%, Math 86%, Science 85%. These place us among the absolute elite high schools in our State! Admittedly we have two areas of focus that we will need to work on to really provide the education that we truly aspire to for all of our students: Writing and Special Education graduation. Consider those areas our focus for this school year!
Athletics is off to a successful start on all fronts. One thing to really keep an eye out for is our Athletic Dept recognizing our Student Athlete of the Week throughout our school year. We are really trying to find new ways to recognize our outstanding student body and this is a great start! Kudos to Athletic Director Robert Medley and Athletic Secretary Brenda Lohman.
A new and exciting program hitting our classrooms this year is "Eastern Promise" which is an opportunity to earn College Credit through courses with Eastern Oregon University. We will be offering classes in Chemistry, Biology, Writing, Speech, College Algebra and Pre-Calculus. Thank you EOU for working with us on this!
Practice has begun for our Fall stage performance through our Drama Club as they will be putting on "Who Invited Them?". Looking forward to another fabulous production! We also have a bunch of new Clubs available to our students and thanks to a wonderful collage of film/advertising from Heidi Hayden and her crew we have a lot of new members in all Clubs. Bird watching anyone? ; )

Hey again everyone! It is a pleasure to again report some of the things happening with our beloved Tribe.
The Fall Sports Season continues to be awesome as each of our teams are rolling and headed for the post-season. If you get the chance make sure you get out here and support our student-athletes while you can. Football, both XC teams, Volleyball, and both Soccer teams are battling through Cowapa League play and having tremendous success!
First Trimester Conferences were AMAZING with the parent turnout; perhaps our new format is on to something.... ; )
Welcome to our GAPP students! It is always amazing to host our German counterparts and this is no exception. Enjoy your time gang!
Our Robotics Team is beginning their competition season with Tomahawk! You will likely see it at an assembly sometime soon. So VERY cool.
Finally, I should have posted this earlier. You want to know what make Scappoose High School so special? While I could literally make that a VERY long answer, for now I will say it's our amazing Staff. Here again is the Staff Video for Homecoming Week, "Tribe Pride Baby". Can I just say again how lucky I am to be the Principal here? Enjoy!

GIRLS SOCCER STATE CHAMPIONS ! Congratulations to Coach Heffernan and his Mighty Tribe in beating La Grande 3-1 for the 4A State Championship played at Liberty HS. Just wow... A perfect cap to a dominant Fall Sports Season for Scappoose High School. Well done everyone, you have competed like Champions, displayed a high level of Class, and most importantly have shown the highest levels of Character. I could not be prouder of ALL of our Teams.
Our Drama Club put on a rendition of "Who Invited Them?"; two words- absolutely amazing! And, I would like to acknowledge Ryan Poster and our Community 101 Crew for donating over 140 hrs of volunteer time at the Oregon Food Bank. Amazing work everyone!
Thank you to Courtney Scott and our Leadership Crew for putting on the Veterans Day Breakfast. It was incredible to see so much pride and honor for our Veterans. Thank you gentlemen for all you have done for our United States of America, we are forever grateful.
As we wind down Trimester 1 I would just like to encourage our students to finish strong! GO THE DISTANCE.

YOU WOULD DIE FOR
AND LIVE FOR IT!

For starters I am SO impressed with our Drama Club and their Adviser Tom Weaver. We literally had so many gifted students who wanted to participate in "12 Angry Jurors" that Mr. Weaver simply decided to 'double-cast' it. Whoa! That will be twice the shows coming up. Unbelievable!
Congratulations to Lucy Davidson for being named the 4A Player of the Year for Girls Soccer! Add to which, Eleanor Jones, Natalie Muth, and Madison Verzino were also recognized for All-State. Hey 4A, you realize they are ALL only Sophomores, right? ; )
Please make sure to check out the Counseling website for info on the upcoming Financial Aid Night.
Happy Holidays everyone!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE !

Lots to tell here everyone...
First of all, I am proud to announce that on December 29, 2013 my wife Stacey and I welcomed our 5th baby boy into the world. His name is Madden D Clendenin and he is simply.....beautiful. Madden joins Kaelin (18), Dawson (9), Nixon (5), and Langston (2). Yes, I officially have a complete starting 5 for my hoops team!
I am pleased to announce that we are stepping our game up in recognizing so many of our student body who do great things that are not always noticed. Beginning this month we will recognize the following:
* Spirit of Tribe Award - Given weekly to 2 students who display excellent support and school spirit for ALL of our programs.
* Above and Beyond Award - Given every 6 weeks to 12 students who are nominated by each Dept for excellence in any area of Academics, Attendance, School Activity, or Community Service.
These are in addition to our Athlete of the Week awards from our Athletic Dept. Each winner will receive a custom t-shirt and a $5 Dutch Bros Card
In addition, at the end of each Trimester we will recognize the following:
* Honor Roll of Excellence - Every student with a 3.5 GPA+ will have their name put in both local papers
* Grade Point Improvement - Any student who increases their GPA by at least .5 from the previous Trimester (also a $5 Dutch Bros Card)
Winter Ball is at The Olde School and it will be amazing! Please make good decisions and enjoy a spectacular night.
Good luck to our FBLA Team at Regionals in Tualatin !
FAFSA ! FAFSA ! FAFSA ! FAFSA ! Is that a strong enough hint? Come on Seniors, get 'er done.
Speaking of strong hints; Senior Seminar Presentation time is getting AWFULLY large in the window - tick tock tick tock tick tock
Thank you to Counselor Whitney Scott for opening The Clothing Closet. It is a great resource for any student who could use an extra coat, etc. Very cool and very confidential.
We had the great fortune to host US Senator Jeff Merkley for a 'Town Hall'. I don't do politics, but that was pretty cool.
PEOPLE OFTEN SAY THAT MOTIVATION DOESN'T LAST. WELL, NEITHER DOES BATHING.
THAT'S WHY WE RECOMMEND IT DAILY.

Is it me or is this year FLYING BY ?
All of our Winter Sports Teams are absolutely rolling! Watch out for the Wrestling Team at State. They rolled the 'Mooks and are Regional Champions! Boys and Girls Hoops are both post-season bound as well as both Swim Teams representing at Districts. Well done everyone! As always, GO TRIBE !
What a spectacular performance by The Coats! That may have been the coolest assembly we have had in awhile, and yes, that IS saying a lot!
A reminder that our Drama Club will be holding auditions for "Hello Dolly". Never been in a play? Now is your chance!
Can I recognize our outstanding Counseling Team of Liz Mahlum, Whitney Scott, and Chad Cosner? You make such a difference and SHS is lucky to have you all here!
A belated congratulations to Abby Kessi and Rex Wilding for Winter Ball King and Queen. THAT WAS COOL. And Rex, you are a great DJ !
Another reminder: Trimester 2 Finals have been moved back a week to March 12 and 13. Sorry gang, it's all about the snow... ; )

March 20, 2014
Congratulations to Coach Jim Jones and his dominating Wrestling squad ! Our Tribe finished 3rd at the Oregon Wrestling State Championships and represented Scappoose in typical fashion; first class. A particular congratulations to Senior Isaiah Goodrich for his individual championship, well done Isaiah !!
Senior Seminar presentations went VERY well and I want to express kudos to this class. Excellent work all around! On that note, Seniors, you are SO close now, please make the best decisions possible down the stretch...
Not sure about you, but this Flight 370 business is....strange. We could probably find a cell phone anywhere in the world, but a Jumbo 777 can just disappear? Prayers for the families of those lost.
Anyone else following the controversy with Portland Public, seat hours for credit, and ODE? Keep an eye on that. Interesting to say the least.
Everyone else may have forgotten, but Spring Break is here! Not that I have been counting down the time... Death Valley here I come ! See you all on the flip side of our break. Yes, we all TRULY NEED IT ! LOL !
April 2, 2014
Just saw the news about the tragedy at Fort Hood. Unbelievable. With Flight 370 and the landslide in Oso, WA it's kind of surreal out there right now. Makes me appreciate the job I have, the people I work with, the kids I get to work with every day, and most importantly the family I get to hug every night.
On a positive note, I had a fabulous Spring Break ! Happy to report that Death Valley saw temps from 88 - 95 degrees while I was there. Yep, decent weather to be poolside or on the golf course in the morning. Just sayin'.
As we get rolling into Trimester 3 it becomes almost shocking how Seniors realize they are truly 'short timers'. It is ultra-exciting to hear what their plans are, etc., but also share those stories reminiscing about "back in the day". Note to self: shouldn't somebody have to be older than 18 to even qualify as having a "back in the day". Something to ponder...
Random thought: Kyle Boggs is the Sports Reporter for The Chronicle and covers all of our sports teams. Class act all the way and truly a pleasure to work with.
Some of our students and Staff just returned today from their trip to Costa Rica and our GAPP students and Staff return tomorrow from Germany. Know of any other 4A school globetrotting the way Scappoose does? Nope, me either. I can't wait to see the pictures and hear the stories!
